Celebrate Art and About

CREATED ON // Sunday, 31 August 2014 Written by // Pip Ditzell

Welcome to that time of year when we celebrate all things art and fashion. One of Sydney’s favourite outdoor art festivals, Art & About Sydney, runs from Friday 19 September to 12 October.

The City of Sydney’s festival opening night, Quarter Acre Block Party, will see Martin Place transformed into a giant backyard with entertainment, food, drinks, garage bands, lawn cricket, dogs, garden furniture, vinyl records and much more.

Come along, join the fun and make Martin Place your backyard for the evening.

The ever-popular Australian Life and Little Sydney Lives photography competitions will have their finalists hanging in Hyde Park North along with the Neon Nomads – 10 three-metre high tepees to illuminate the artworks of some of Australia’s and the world’s best graphic artists.  You can find all of the information you need to enjoy Art & About Sydney here: artandabout.com.au.

The popular Sydney is Fashion event is also held this month. Apart from the famous fashion parades in Sydney Town Hall from 24 to 27 September, shoppers in the CBD for the night of 4 September can experience free and exclusive fashion shows, live fashion shoots, in-store events and music performances.

Then, on the weekend of 20 and 21 September, fashion comes to our City villages with a special program of in-store activities, art installations, special offers, VIP events and designer guests. For more details, visit whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/events/14941-sydney-is-fashion-2014.

To round off the festival fun this month, the City is also supporting the Sydney Fringe Festival, a celebration of new and independent artists. The Fringe program features artist trails, quirky venues, family friendly events, artist workshops and public forums until 30 September. For more details, visit sydneyfringe.com

The City is helping residents make the transition from house to apartment living smoother with a series of free practical workshops, Strata Skills 101.

If you’re moving into strata as a retiree, downsizing, or new to Australia, sign up for High-rise Matchmaking: Will you be compatible with your new home? This workshop on 9 September explores the essentials beyond bricks and mortar, regardless of whether you own or rent.

On 16 September, the City hosts Strata Paws: Living with pets in apartments. Presented by animal behaviourist Dr Joanne Righetti, from Pet Problems Solved, this workshop focusses on how to keep your pets happy in apartments.
