Robbie Rogers contract extended with LA Galaxy
US soccer team LA Galaxy revealed last week they have extended the contract of star defender Robbie Rogers.
Rogers made headlines in February 2013 when he came out as gay, and made history when in May of that year he became the first openly gay man to compete in a top North American professional sports league when he played his first match for the Galaxy.
Rogers was born in California but moved to England to play for, firstly, Leeds United and then Stevenage. Rogers came out after leaving the English competition and entering a brief retirement.
Three months later Rogers joined the LA Galaxy and after switching from midfield to defence, he hasn’t looked back.
Hi autobiography Coming Out to Play has been praised for its honest portrayal of the pressures on professional athletes to stay in the closet and the emotional trauma it causes them.
Rogers’ contract was renewed along with team mates forward Jose Villarreal and midfielder Rafael Garcia. The terms of their contracts remain confidential.
