Recapping the glory of the Outgames with the SX Sydney Rough Diamonds

From softball to volleyball, the SX Sydney Rough Diamonds shone brightly at the Asia-Pacific Outgames in Darwin.

“We had an amazing time,” said Rough Diamonds co-captain Hayley Lockett of the team’s recent sojourn to the Asia-Pacific Outgames in Darwin.

An all-girl team made up of members of two local Sydney baseball outfits (The Stealers and The Shamrocks), the SX Sydney Rough Diamonds came together to compete in the ‘Gayathlon’ component of the Darwin Outgames. Over four strenuous days, the girls gave it all on the playing fields, competing for medals in softball, volleyball, soccer and basketball.

Lockett said the highlight for her was the opening ceremony and she said getting to make lots of new friends was another bonus. She described the competition element of the Gayathlon as “intense”.

“I think the four days of sports tested us in many ways.”

She said that while the ‘Roughies’ (as they became affectionately referred to throughout the games) were baseball players, they did surprisingly well in the other team sport events, earning gold medals in all sports bar the soccer. “The legless emus kicked our ass,” she chuckled.

“I think we did really well,” she added. “We were all just excited to go and play sport and meet new people and wear our lovely new uniforms.”

Lockett said the biggest surprise was picking up a gold medal for beach volleyball. “Everyone got back to Sydney and the girls are still all going, ‘Oh I think we should have a volleyball team’.”

For the time being though, the Roughies will be sticking to their preferred sport of baseball – where the girls will now face off against each other in their various teams from the Sydney baseball league.

Asked if she would consider competing again in the Outgames, Lockett’s response was immediate.

“Definitely. It was fun, friendly and exciting. I would recommend the experience to anyone. I would encourage anyone to give it a go and encourage more girls to go along. I think all the Roughies would do it again.”
