First openly gay player announced for the NCAA tournament
Derrick Gordon will make basketball history when he plays at the NCAA tournament.
Gordon, a former University of Massachusetts player came out in 2014 but will make history when his new team, The Pirates, take to the court against Villanova for the NCAA tournament on Thursday.
The match will mark the third time Gordon has played in an NCAA tournament. He reached the 2012 tournament with Western Kentucky and the 2014 tournament with Massachusetts.
He came out just three weeks after playing in this prestigious game. His 2016 appearance at the tournament will make him the first openly gay player to reach the tournament with three programs.
He’s hoping this year his team can make it to the final four to compete in the Big East Championships.
