Excitement builds among queer footballers ahead of World Cup kick off
Soccer fever is about to hit town with the World Cup kicking off in Brazil on June 12.
Among those that’ll be revelling in the football spirit are the girls from local lesbian soccer club, The Flying Bats, including (from left) Megan Baiochhi, Jeanette McConnell and Samara Fitzpatrick.
The tournament will build on the recent surge of interest in the sport, thanks to The Matildas valiant efforts at the Asian Cup.
The Flying Bats president Sophie Partridge said the men’s World Cup will continue to shine a light on the sport.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing how the men fare,” she told SX.
“I think there is a considerable amount of interest in women’s soccer. It’s one of our fastest growing sports, because you can play at such a range of ability levels – but I think the World Cup raises the interest levels so it’s great to get that kind of attention for our sport.”
