Chargers defeat Convicts to bring home the Bingham Cup

LAST UPDATED // Monday, 30 May 2016 13:35 Written by // Cec Busby

Reigning champions the Sydney Convicts have been defeated at the Bingham Cup in Nashville, in a grueling final battle to bring the prized trophy back to Australia.

With 41 teams from countries as far flung as the UK, New Caledonia and Canada competing for the top honour, the Aussie teams were the last ones standing when it came time to take to the field for the grand final.

Both teams put in a spectacular display of rugby, with the half time score s seeing the Chargers just ahead with a 5-0 lead. Whilst the defending champs continued to play hard in the second half – nothing could slow the Chargers momentum with the Melbourne team going on to take out the game 20-7.

The Chargers’ Ben Cohen also took out top honour for outstanding sportsmanship in the game of rugby and Lachlan Mitchell was named Player of the Tournament.

Good report but not quite right. The Chargers took out the Ben Cohen Award for outstanding sportsmanship. He's not a Charger, but the professional rugby player the award is named after.
