Bentstix girls take out grand final in local Eastern District league

The women’s team of gay and lesbian hockey club Bentstix has taken out the grand final in the Eastern District Women’s Hockey Association, becoming the first queer girls team to claim the major premiership.

It is among a host of achievements by the club this season, with the division 3 team also taking out the minor premiership and its players Nat Stewart and Gemma Hartman recognised for their sportswomanship. Stewart was awarded Best on the Ground in the grand final while Hartman, a Phoenix Medal winner, received both Best and Fairest for Eastern Districts division 3 as well as the Best and Fairest for all of Eastern Districts competition.

In a statement, the club expressed its pride of the team’s success.

“Playing our hardest and being a part of the team on and off the field is what Bentstix Hockey Club is all about,” the statement read.

“Our ethos is to be welcoming no matter who you are, be supportive and encouraging no matter what your skill level, to work hard as a team no matter what the score, to be committed to the team no matter how hungover or tired you are, to be competitive no matter who we play, and no matter what, have fun and never give up.

“In our club, the measure of success is not in the trophies we win (although it feels soooo good), but in the fun we have, the skills we learn, the constant improvement as players, the positive support we give each other, the friends we make and in the competitive, fair nature in which we play hockey.

“We play not as individuals or for ourselves, but as a team and for each other.”

Benstix President Emma Rogers thanks the community for their ongoing support.

“The crowds and support at the games this year have been amazing,” Rogers said.

“We’re very fortunate to have many wonderful supporters for both our men’s and women’s teams.”

Bentstix welcomes new players of all skill levels for both their men’s and women’s team throughout the year.
