Lesbians ramping up need for donor sperm
New figures show that lesbians are ramping up the drive for donor sperm.
New Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) data show that lesbians and single women are creating a high demand for donor sperm.
Lesbians make up 35 per cent of those undergoing treatment while single women make up half of all women using donor sperm.
The data showed that in the past year 684 single women, 476 lesbian couples and 202 heterosexual couple were using donor sperm.
Authorities believe the increase is due to legalisation changes in 2010 which allowed single women and lesbian couples to obtain donor sperm.
VARTA chief executive Louise Johnson said the demand is outstripping the supply and there is a shortage of donors.
More than 5000 children have been born from donor sperm since 1988, and there are 1127 registered sperm donors in Victoria.
