First lesbian to be crowned Miss Missouri
The beauty queen world has just welcomed its first out lesbian Miss Missouri.
Erin O’Flaherty who was crowned at the pageant in the city of Mexico, this week is the first openly lesbian Miss America candidate in the pageant’s 95-year history.
The 23-year-old said she came out when she was 18.
She told the Associated Press:
“I’m on cloud nine really just to be Miss Missouri. I don’t know that I intended to be the first (openly lesbian), but I am. So I’m very excited about it.”
O’Flaherty will be the first LGBTIQ woman to compete in the Miss America scholarship pageant which will take place in Atlantic City on 11 September.
O’Flaherty said on social media:
“I am SO excited for the year ahead and to serve this amazing state alongside my beautiful and talented teen, Christina Stratton. I can't thank everyone enough for the support and encouragement I've received so far. Every word means more than you know. Here's to an amazing year together!”
The new Miss Missouri is a strong supporter of LGBTIQ rights, however she isn't planning on making LGBTIQ issue her sole focus.
