We don’t serve fags: gay couple told to leave restaurant
A young gay couple were told to never return to a family restaurant in Texas on Tuesday after being informed by their waitress “we don’t serve fags here’.
The couple, Kelly Williams and Colin Dewberry said the waitress, the daughter of the proprietor at Big Earl’s Restaurant in Pittsburgh reportedly said: “Here at Big Earl’s we like for men to act like men and for ladies to act like ladies, so we want you to never return”.
The couple had been eating breakfast at the restaurant and were on their way out after paying their bill when the waitress stopped them. Dewberry said the waitress also commented “we don’t serve fags here”.
“We’ve never had that kind of hate displayed to us before,’ Dewberry said.
The waitress had been quoting Big Earl’s policy – which is signposted on the restaurant door.
Proprietor Earl Cheney defended his daughter’s reaction and told reporters on KLTV that his policy was a “Christian one”. He reported that the two men had been touching each other.
"I didn’t go over there to inspect to see what he was rubbing. That’s just not appropriate in a family restaurant that has a sign on the front door that we just don’t do that here,’ he said.
“She’s a young lady, didn’t know what else to say, and they just kept on and she finally said we just don’t like fags.”
Cheney said contrary to his daughter’s comment, gay couples were welcome in his restaurant as long as they behaved appropriately.
"A man’s supposed to stand up and be a leader. He’s not supposed to be a woman. He’s not supposed to come in here in a dress,’ he said.
