UK schools prepare for same sex marriage with new range of picture books
In preparation for the impending weddings of hundreds of same-sex couples across England and Wales, British schools are introducing a range of storybooks to their primary school students that include same-sex weddings.
The books are part of a range of teaching tools from the from the Educate and Celebrate: Challenging Homophobia in Primary Schools program which provides teachers with books and lesson plans to tackle homophobia in schools.
One particular book King and King is being recommended by the program for primary school students. In King and King, Prince Bertie is being groomed for marriage by his mother, who parades a sucession of princesses past him with little success. One day Prince Lee arrives with his sister Princess Madeline and for Lee and Bertie its love at first sight. Eventually they marry and become King and King and live happily ever after…
Educate and Celebrate hopes by introducing literature such as this into schools issues such as homophobia can be tackled at an early age.
King and King has previously been banned in the US.
