Pakistan: Transgender woman murdered, another abducted and raped
Six suspects have been arrested and charged following the murder and rape of several transgender women in the Pakistani district of Swabi on Monday.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday morning. A group of transgender performers were returning home after appearing at a wedding when they were set upon by six armed men.
Sajjad Khan, district police chief of Swabi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, told media the suspects had been lying in wait for the victims and had attempted to abduct all of them when the incident to an extremely violent turn.
"The attackers opened fire after the refusal. One transgender and one drummer died on the spot while another was wounded," Khan said.
Khan told media the men then abducted the surviving victim who was released by her captives several hours.
"The victim told police that [s]he was set free after being gang-raped by four persons," the police officer added.
Khan told the AFP, police had arrested six suspects in relation to the crimes and they were being charged with murder and gang rape.
