More gay bashings during Pride

While the world’s LGBTI community is coming out loud and proud this month in celebration of Pride, it seems so too are the homophobes, with a spate of gay bashings occurring around the globe, throughout the weekend.

The latest attack was on a 26-year-old Buenos Aires man who was beaten after a night out on the town.

Ariel Olivera said he was set upon by thugs in the early hours of Sunday morning after he’d spent the evening out dancing at venues in La Boca. The young gay man was walking home when two men began shouting homophobic slurs at him, saying “Kill the faggots”.

The men then gave chase and once they had caught up with Olivera administered a brutal bashing that left Olivera unconscious and with broken bones.

"People have yelled stuff at me before on the street, but never to this extreme," he said in a statement to Infojus.

Despite the homophobic language used by the perpetrators of the attack, police have not listed the incident as a hate crime.

César Cigliutti, president of the Comunidad Homosexual Argentina, told Gay Star News: “What happened was serious. The important thing is to contextualise these matters. This is typical of the homophobia that the gay community is suffering from, and not just some people on the street, but also the police.”
