Lesbian crowned Rose of Tralee
Meet Boston’s Maria Walsh. The 27-year-old former journalism student recently took out the crown in one of Ireland’s most prestigious pageants, the Rose of Tralee, making her the festival’s first gay winner.
Walsh told the Irish Sun the question of her sexuality never came up whilst competing in the competition, which unlike most pageants chooses its winner for her personality and attributes such as how well she will represent as an ambassador rather than on beauty alone.
The 27-year-old Boston native told the Irish Sun "To me, being gay is normal. To me, being gay is natural.
"I told my parents, and they were supportive, as I knew they would be."
Walsh is the 56th winner of the Rose of Tralee. The competition took place over two days last week and is part of the Rose of Tralee International Festival which takes place in Kerry each year.
Chairman of the festival Anthony O'Gara has said Maria's sexuality is likely to "create some interest."Hopefully all positive" he said.
