Disney withdraws funding from Scouts over gay leader ban
The Walt Disney Company announced it will withdraw funding from the Boy Scouts of America unless the scouting organisation overturns its ban on gay scout leaders.
In the past few years Disney employees have raised millions of dollars for the Scouts by participating in volunteer events. The Boy Scouts of America will now become ineligible to receive further funding as the group discriminates based on sexual orientation.
Scouts for Equality, a group working to end discrimination in the Boy Scouts, voiced approval of Disney’s decision to cut funding.
“We’re never happy to see Scouting suffer as a result of the BSA’s anti-gay policy, but Disney made the right decision to withhold support until Scouting is fully inclusive,” Eagle Scout and Scouts for Equality co-founder Zach Wahls said.
