Whoopi Goldberg squashes lesbian rumours
She’s played a lesbian in The Colour Purple and Boys on the Side and has been dogged by lesbian rumours since she began her career but now Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg has put the rumours to bed in an interview with PrideSource.
The LGBTI ally told Chris Azzopardi, “You’ve never seen me with a woman. I’m straight... but what does that mean? What does that really mean?”
Goldberg said she was not bothered by the lesbian rumours as she’d been surrounded by gay people in her early years. "There are a lot worse things people could have accused me of -- things that would really be upsetting! That's not one of them," she commented.
"It never has been. I grew up in the theater. I grew up in a neighborhood where there was always gay folks."
The comedian and host of popular talk show, The View, told Azzopardi she had always valued her gay fan-base, especially for the support they gave her when first starting out.
"You know, no one was trying to claim me, nobody wanted me. Black folks didn't want me. Nobody wanted me. But I've always been claimed by the gay community. Always."
Goldberg went on to suggest people may try to find differences between LGBTI people and straight people but said we're all the same really.
"People keep trying to divide us up into 'you're gay, you're black, you're white,' but we're all one people. What fucks with one fucks with us all. If we don't recognize that, we're in deep trouble."
