Brisbane couple Paul and Darren had more than Christmas on their minds over the holidays: they got married.

The pair underwent a marriage ceremony in front of 60 friends and family at Belongil Beach in Byron Bay on December 21.

The mayor of Byron Shire, Simon Richardson, acted as celebrant and the couple say he is a long-time supporter of marriage equality.

Despite marriage between same-sex couples not being recognised by either the Commonwealth of state government, Byron Shire offers a marriage certificate and maintains a register for couples to sign.

“I thought this news might help to further the marriage equality cause and also provide information on how Byron Shire is doing all it can to provide a friendly and supportive place for same sex couples,” Paul says.
