WATCH: Tori Amos covered t.A.T.u's lesbian anthem before Putin took to stage
Tori Amos has revealed she covered a lesbian anthem by Russian pop group t.A.T.u during a concert in Moscow, not knowing President Putin was the next person to appear on the stage.
The singer who is touring Australia in November, is renowned for covering songs aligned with queer or lgbti friendly artists in a show of solidarity for equal rights. Amos most recenty covered T.A.T.U's lesbian anthem, Not Gonna Get Us during a concert in Russia.
"To play a t.A.T.u. song, a lesbian anthem, in Moscow — you’ve gotta grab it with both hands, because if you don’t, it’s not going to work," Amos said.
"The Russian audiences suggested it and I thought OK, that’s a really good idea. Little did I know, Putin was the next person to take that stage. He was going to be giving a speech there the next morning. His security showed up at the end of my show to start scoping the place, not knowing I’d just sung a lesbian anthem on stage."
