The U.S. Ambassador to Australia, John Berry, has touched on the issue of same-sex marriage in Australia, while taking questions during his address to the National Press Club in Canberra.

The Ambassador spoke candidly about his own relationship saying he "never dreamed" he would be able to get married to his partner of 17 years.

“I have to tell you, the day we did, both of us said it was so ennobling and sustaining, to have your family and your friends come out and bless and support very visibly your love for each other.”

“We both knew that love was there, but we didn’t believe it in our hearts as much as we do now – and that’s a statement I will take to my grave”

Berry then addressed the same-sex marriage debate within the country stating:

"We wish Australia well in its debate on this issue. This is an issue that Australians need to wrestle with themselves.

"We look forward to the outcome of that debate."

Ambassador Berry will be attending the upcoming 2014 AIDS Conference in Melbourne.
