WATCH: Penny Wong lashes out at homophobic behaviour in Australia’s sporting culture
South Australian Senator Penny Wong has lashed out at homophobic behaviour in Australia’s sporting culture during a passionate address to the Senate.
Openly gay Senator Wong began today’s address by praising champion swimmer Ian Thorpe for coming out saying she was moved by the "frank" interview which aired with journalist Michael Parkinson over the weekend.
Simultaneously however, she was also "angered and upset" by comments sports commentator Brian Taylor made in referring to an AFL footballer as a ‘big poofter" during a live broadcast on Channel Seven, prompting her to declare:
“Homophobia is never acceptable.”
Senator Wong observed some individuals may view Taylor’s comments as a joke.
"It isn't a joke to be on the receiving end of a word like poofter, or many other words like it.
"It's no joke to be caught in the crossfire of prejudice and it's no joke to live with the fear of being rejected or vilified or persecuted because of who you are."
