New Zealand Labour MP, Louisa Wall, has gone on the record to tell Tony Abbott not to be "afraid of democracy or the people" and allow a conscience vote on marriage equality.

Wall's legislation lead to the historic passage of marriage equality in New Zealand last year and she is now urging Aussie Prime Minister Tony Abbott to allow a free vote on the reform.

Wall released a YouTube video of her appeal to the PM today.  In it she says: "Marriage quality is about democracy."

"For those of you who believe in democracy, who want to engage your communities, I would encourage you to ask for a free vote."
