WA students take on Westboro Baptist Church

LAST UPDATED // Friday, 28 March 2014 15:10

The recent death of Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) founder Fed Phelps has not diminished the hateful agenda of the controversial US Church, well known for its catch-cry 'God Hates Fags'.

Margaret River Senior High School in WA has incurred the wrath of the WBC for performing The Laramie Project.

Next week students at the school are performing the play, which deals with the murder of gay US high school student Matthew Shepard in 1998. However an article on upcoming production attracted the attention of the WBC, who took to Twitter to protest the performance from across the globe.

“WBC to preach God H8s Fags @ the Margaret River Senior High School - the land of the damned down under,” Church members tweeted.

Students at the school said they must be doing something right if the WBC opposed it even responded to the hateful message.

“@WBCSays thanks for the promotion of our show :) xxxxx,” one tweeted.

School principal Andrew Host commended the student's for their choice of the play and response to the WBC.

“We're a school that promotes social tolerance,” he said.

“It's a challenging text and I'm sure they will do an outstanding job of performing it.”
