Victorious Brisbane Hustlers look towards Bingham Cup win in August
Brisbane has high hopes for winning the world gay rugby union cup in August, following a decisive victory in the national title against Sydney on the weekend.
The Brisbane Hustlers won the Purchas Cup, the national gay rugby union title, in matches against the Sydney Convicts and the Melbourne Chargers at Queensland’s spiritual home of rugby union, Ballymore Stadium.
The Convicts are the current holders of the Bingham Cup, the world cup of gay and inclusive rugby union.

In the final against the Convicts, the Hustlers scored in the first half to make it 7-0, then both teams scored in the second half with the Hustlers holding on to win 12-5.
“The final 10 minutes were extremely tense as we saw both teams put everything on the line to win, showing how much the Purchas Cup means to the players,” said Hustlers vice-president Martin Tebbutt.
For both experienced and new players, Tebbutt said, playing at Ballymore was a very special experience.
Brisbane Hustlers' sweet victory.
“All four teams were in awe of the stadium before the start of play, and by the end, were playing with the intensity of the many great interstate matches played before. For the winning Brisbane side, playing at Ballymore definitely resulted in them playing out of their skin!”
The next challenge for the Hustlers is playing in the Bingham Cup in Sydney in August.
“As a newly reformed club, this is a great step forward for the Hustlers, and marks our return as a force in the world of gay rugby.
“Leading into the Bingham Cup later this year, to beat the current World Cup holders for the first time, is a great achievement, and encourages us to train harder and build towards adding some more silverware to the cabinet.”
