Go ahead for Wellington Street bike lanes

Copenhagen style bike lanes will be installed in the City of Yarra's Wellington Street despite opposition from local traders, including sauna and SOP venue Wet on Wellington.

Copenhagen lanes are located next to the kerb and separated from traffic by a lane of parked cars and plans to introduce them were presented to council last February but traders and non-profit organisations campaigned against the loss of 117 car parks claiming their removal would impact customer and delivery access.

Following a 5-4 vote by council last month, lanes will be installed this year in Wellington St between Victoria Parade and Johnston Street.
In November Wet on Wellington manager Shane Gardner told councillors the plan would probably put the venue out of business.

Gardner told MCV at the time that Wet on Wellington relied on the street parking, particularly on weekdays.

“If there was no parking there would be less custom and the venue would most like be turned into apartments if business was not viable," he said.

Gardner added that there are already bike paths in the area from Johnston Street to Victoria Street but that a “super freeway smack in the middle of the industrial area isn’t helpful to anyone.”
