Gay venues may be the target of counterfeit notes
A Melbourne venue owner has asked people to be on the lookout for counterfeit notes circulating in gay venues.
A counterfeit $100 bill was passed in the GH Hotel on the weekend of October 4-5 followed by another last week at Wet on Wellington.
Shane Gardner, who manages both venues, told MCV that as they passed during busy periods, staff did not notice the difference at first.
“If you scrunch them up they’re just paper,” he said.
“In a bit of dim lighting, working quickly, you feel them and they are not bad.
“But you’ve got to scrunch them up to know for sure.”
Gardner said that after identifying another counterfeit $100 they had not seen any more at Wet on Wellington or GH but that a $50 bill was passed at their sauna in Seaford.
They identified it as a counterfeit the same way and he suspects gay venues are being targeted.
He said that police are investigating the counterfeits and urged people to be vigilant at gay venues as smaller denomination bills may be circulating.
