AFL 9s ‘kicks off’ for Midsumma

AFL 9s ‘kicks off’ for Midsumma

The much anticipated, Midsumma AFL 9s skills session and game takes place this Saturday, February 1.

Carlton's Brock McLean joins Midsumma Festival Champion Jason Ball for the session which gives the GLBTI community a chance to try the AFL’s newest form of the game as part of the Midsumma Team Melbourne Sports Day.

McLean recently became an Athlete Ally ambassador, furthering his campaigning against homophobia. Ball was appointed Festival Champion in recognition of his anti-homophobia campaigning and is now working with the AFL on initiatives for the game to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for the GLBTI community.

AFL 9s is a new AFL styled game involving nine players on each team and playing on a smaller field with no tackling. AFL 9s also allows for people of all ages and ability to participate in male, female or mixed competitions.

AFL General Manager – People, Customer & Community, Dorothy Hisgrove said the aim was to expose as many potential players to the game as possible.

“It is a game for everyone and we welcome the opportunity to team up with the Midsumma Team Melbourne Sports Day to encourage members of the GLBTI community to come along, have a kick and give AFL 9s a go,” Hisgrove added.

Ball welcomed the greater prominence of sporting events at this year's Midsumma.

“As the home of football it makes sense for Melbourne's premier queer festival to include the opportunity to come and try AFL, alongside all of the other sports already on offer at the Midsumma Sports Day,” he said.

“The modified rules of AFL9's makes it the perfect option for beginners to the game. It's fast, fun and easy to play. It is also fairly easy to get a group of friends together and play competitively in a local AFL9's competition.”

The Team Melbourne Midsumma Sports Day takes place this Saturday at Footscray Park & Victoria University, Maribyrnong Boulevard, Footscray. From 9am McLean and Ball join the St Albans Spurs FC for a skills session and training drills followed at 10 am by the 30 minute AFL 9s exhibition game.
