Ugandan tabloid exposes ‘Top 200 homos’

Just one day after the Uganda President Yoweri Museveni signed an anti-gay Bill into law, a Ugandan tabloid, The Red Pepper, has gone to press with a front page article - Exposed! Uganda’s Top 200 Homos Named!

The newspaper has listed those who have openly declared their sexuality as well as outing many prominent Ugandans, including rock stars and priests.

Museveni’s new law makes consensual sex between homosexuals punishable by a 14 year jail term and sentences repeat offenders to life imprisonment. The new law also makes it illegal to promote homosexuality and requires people to denounce gay people or face jail time themselves.

LGBT activists are concerned the Red Pepper’s article could lead to acts of violence against members of the gay community. In 2011 gay rights activist David Kato was bludgeoned to death in his home following publication of a similar article which also supplied prominent LGBT people’s names and addresses.
