Tribute to Alaska St James this weekend
A tribute event for much-loved Brisbane drag queen Alaska St James, aka Daryl Pike, will be held this weekend in Brisbane, after Pike died peacefully at home, aged 39.
As Alaska, he was a constant presence in the community not only on stage, but around issues including mental health for which he performed at countless fundraisers.
Kieren Hunt, who met Alaska/Pike in Sydney in 2000 and lived with her there for a while, described her as “bold, loud and obnoxious – but in such a fun way”.
“She was a fun-loving, kind-hearted person,” Hunt said.
A Facebook tribute page for Alaska St James has been set up featuring images from her drag career, and there will be a tribute event for at Imaginations nightclub in Spring Hill (the old Options) this Sunday, March 23 from 2.30 - 9pm. (Facebook: Daryl Pike and Alaska St James @ old Options.)
The Daryl Pike Foundation has been established, “In honour of our beloved friend Daryl Pike/Alaska St James, this Foundation has been set up to continue the legacy of all the tiresome hard work that Daryl/Alaska did for our community & the charities he/she was involved in.”
Details of how you can donate to the foundation are on its Facebook page here.
