Teen show Awkward adds two gay characters
Popular MTV teen dramedy, Awkward, will get an injection of gay culture from season four with gay writers and showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler adding two new gay characters to the mix at Palos Hills High...
Speaking about what’s in store for the teens as they enter their senior year, Alberghini commented: “Then we’ve got two gay characters named Theo [played by Evan Crooks] and Cole [played by Monty Geer]. As gay writers, it’s obviously important to us to have gay characters on a TV show, so we looked at what we hadn’t seen on TV yet, and we liked the idea of these gay guys whose sexuality wasn’t the most important thing in their lives. They are a bit obnoxious, kind of in the tradition of Stifler from American Pie or Beavis and Butthead — they just happen to be gay.”
Geer and Crooks have both appeared in guest roles on TV prior to joining the cast of Awkward with Geer best known for a guestie on Broadwalk Empire and Crooks for parts in Grey’s Anatomy and The Carrie Diaries. Awkward will mark their first roles as a series’ regular.
