Sydney Convicts win Purchas Cup
Fans of gay Rugby team, the Sydney Convicts, will be pleased to discover the team have walked away as the winner at Australia’s Gay Rugby Championships in Melbourne.
The Convicts battled it out for the top slot with Melbourne Gay team, the Chargers and Brissie heroes, The Brisbane Hustlers.
The teams fought it out in the one day tournament for the Purchas Cup, named after the founder of the Australian gay rugby movement, Andrew ‘Fuzz’ Purchas.
A large crowd of spectators gathered to watch at the event at Melbourne Charger's home ground, as all three teams gave their all on the sporting field.
The Convicts defeated all-comers to take out the top honour, snatching a victory from Melbourne and soundly defeating the Brisbane Hustlers 17-12 to come away with the trophy.
Fuzz Purchas said, “Australian gay rugby took a giant leap forward on the weekend. The tournament was the best ever. It’s fantastic to see gay rugby growing in Australia and high quality rugby being played at the tournament.”
