Say ‘I do’ for marriage equality this weekend
The Rainbow Army are inviting you to take part in a mock wedding ceremony this weekend to say 'I Do' for marriage equality.
The Rainbow Army is encouraging everyone who supports same-sex marriage to assemble at Sydney’s Hyde Park North on Sunday August 25 at 2pm and take part in a mock wedding to protest the current inequalities in the marriage law for LGBTI people.
The Rainbow Army says “if you are in support of marriage equality dress up come along, bring your partner, your boyfriend/girlfriend or best friend and say “I Do” for marriage rights in Australia”.
Anyone wishing to take part in the protest should assemble at the Elizabeth street entrance to Hyde Park north (near the Archibald fountain) whereupon the event will move to an undisclosed location at 230pm in preparation for the ceremony.
Cat Rose co-convenor of Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) commented “Rudd used his announcements to say he “won’t force this on anyone” but these laws have been forced on us for too long. It’s not good enough to promise us his one vote and leave the rest to chance. He needs to use his position as party leader to demand that MPs vote with him. We want all politicians to commit to marriage equality before the election.”
The Rainbow Army is hoping the protest will draw further attention to issue of marriage equality in Australia and galvanise politicians to act.
