Safe Schools Coalition, Victoria, has taken to crowdsourcing website IndieGoGo to seek funds for their latest project, aimed at challenging homophobia and transphobia in schools.
The project, All of Us, has already raised over three thousand dollars since launching last week.
The aim of the project is to develop a series of videos aimed at capturing the lives of LGBTI young people and develop a curriculum that teaches that LGBTI kids are no different to any other teens.
“For many young LGBT students, schools are still not a safe place to be” said project manager and pre-service teacher, Chris Bush.
“Changing school cultures requires innovative programs and new angles for teachers to address existing attitudes and beliefs. This is the gap in existing school curriculum which ‘All of Us’ aims to fill.”
All of Us captures moments in the lives of young LGBT teens, the majority of whom are still in high school through a series of short videos. Accompanying the films will be a series of proven lesson plans and resources.
“We hope it will allow any teacher, in any school to effectively challenge homophobia and promote sexual and gender diversity in their classroom.” Bush said.
“Schools have come a long way in recent years to including resources on sexuality and gender diversity in curriculum's, but much of this still taught through the clinical prism of sex ed which overlooks the broader social diversity which young people are exposed to in the 21st century.”
Roz Ward, director of Safe Schools Coalition Victoria agrees, “This project has the potential to be used in schools across Australia to open up much needed discussions about gender and sexual diversity in the classroom”
