Queen Elizabeth to dock in Sydney for Mardi Gras
The biggest Queen of all, the Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth will dock in Sydney Harbour at 7am on Saturday March 1, just in time for Mardi Gras celebrations.
In the spirit of the occasion, the luxury liner will deliver a display of theatrics to rival Felicia’s entry to the outback atop the Priscilla bus! Drag Queen Vanity Faire will be poised atop a giant 2.2 metre stiletto on the ocean liner’s top deck adorned with a dazzling multi-coloured cape (126 metres thank you very much!) as the ship pulls in to port.
Not wanting to be outdone, the Harbour Bridge will be festooned with giant rainbow flags on its pylons, proclaiming “Happy Mardi Gras”.
Mardi Gras is hoping the public will line the foreshore to welcome the Queen(s) to city, as Sydney gets set for all the razzle dazzle and spectacle that is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
Mardi Gras has advised the best vantage point will be on the southern side of the Harbour from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair to East Circular Quay. The QE will arrive through the Heads around 7am on Saturday March 1 when the cape will be unfurled. Vanity will take up her position on the stiletto before the liner approaches the Opera House at around 7.30am.
