Putin signs law banning protests during Sochi Olympics
Russian president Vladimir Putin has signed a decree banning demonstrations and rallies during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
According to the AP, the decree, signed on Friday, effectively blocks demonstrations from taking place and will take effect for a two and a half month period (which covers the games).
Putin published the decree in the government newspaper. It states all “gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, marches and pickets” which are not part of the Winter Olympics or Paralympics will be barred in the city between January 7 and March 21 2014.
The Sochi Winter Olympics is due to take place between February 7-23, and the Paralympics are due to take place on March 7-16, clearly falling within the boundaries of the 'no demonstrations' decree.
