Penny Sharpe appointed Patron of Rainbow Babies and Kids Camping Group
Member of the NSW Legislative Council, Penny Sharpe, has become the inaugural patron of Rainbow Babies and Kids Camping.
Rainbow Babies and Kids Camping is a social group established some fifteen years ago by a group of lesbian mothers that decided to start taking two camping trips a year in order that their children would get to meet with other children from same-sex families.
Deb Gavan, Co-ordinator of Rainbow Babies and Kids Camping, said the group is pleased to announce Sharpe as their patron.
“Penny and her family have previously participated in Rainbow Babies and Kids camping and she knows that our bi-annual camps provide fun and support to kids as well as helping to build a community that supports LGBTI families across NSW,” Gavan said.
“Penny’s strong advocacy for the needs of LGBTI families means that Penny will be able to work with us to help Rainbow Babies and Kids Camping continue to grow so we can provide opportunities for more kids to come together and hang out with families just like theirs.”
Sharpe said she is honoured to be asked to be a patron of Rainbow Babies and Kids, who she admires for their passionate volunteer work for the LGBTI families and community.
“This group is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers who saw a need in our community and with nothing more that will and hard work, have built a bi-annual event that supports LGBTI families.” said Sharpe.
It is expected over 50 families will attend the next camp at Easts Beach Caravan Park in Kiama for the 15th anniversary of Rainbow Babies and Kids, November 8-9 2013.
According to Gavan, the kids are the focus of the event. Friendships are formed or renewed and the children have a chance to hangout with kids of all ages in an environment that is totally child friendly and about having fun.
