Opera Australia announces replacement for Tamar Iveri

Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian will be stepping in at the eleventh hour as a replacement for recently dumped Georgian singer Tamar Iveri in Otello.

Iveri was dropped as Desdemona in Opera Australia’s upcoming production of Verdi's classic opera, following reports of a homophobic posting on her Facebook page. In the post, which resurfaced on Friday, Iveri was said to liken LGBT people to faeces.

Following the post coming to light, Iveri blamed her husband for the rant, saying he had hijacked her Facebook page. The following day after a backlash from the LGBTI community and advocates, Opera Australia bowed to pressure and dropped Iveri from the production, describing the soprano'scomments as unconscionable.

Iveri’s replacement,  Lianna Haroutounian, has been described as one of the most promising sopranos of her generation. Her performance in Otello will mark Haroutounian's debut with Opera Australia.

Opera Australia’s production of Otello plays from July 5 - August 2 at the Sydney Opera House.
