Remembrance days for intersex and trans communities
SYDNEY: Two key events are being held over the next fortnight to pay tribute to people from the intersex and transgender communities.
On Tuesday, November 8, members of Sydney’s intersex community and their supporters will be coming together at the Courthouse Hotel in Newtown for Intersex Day of Remembrance.
The event will pay tribute to intersex advocates including 19th century French provincial teacher Herculine Babin, widely regarded as the first intersex person to have written their biography, and who was driven to suicide after judicial authorities of the time forced a transition to ‘male’.
Intersex Day of Remembrance will cap off ‘Fourteen Day of Intersex’, a two-week initiative which aimed to raise awareness of intersex issues.
Meanwhile, The Gender Centre will mark this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance at a special event at NSW Parliament House on Friday, November 18.
Now in its thirteenth year, Transgender Day of Remembrance is held annually to honour those who have been killed because of their gender identity or due to hatred of gender diversity.
Organised by The Gender Centre, the event, will also aim to convey that help and support is available for people currently experiencing transphobia, through the Transgender Anti-Violence Project.
Launched in May earlier this year, the project provides a range of free confidential services to help those who are victims of transphobic violence, abuse, harassment and/or discrimination.
“We know that transgender people are victims of sexual violence, domestic violence, harassment and other hate crimes every day, and that many crimes go unreported,” said The Gender Centre manager Phinn Borg.
“We need to know about your experiences to be able to help you, and to stop this from happening to others.”

Why didn't the Gender Center organise TDOR for the actual day it is held, Sunday 20th November? Why hold a remembrance ceremony most can't attend because they are employed and most likely will not have the opportunity to have time off to go to. As for the format of the day, don't get to thinking you might get to speak to a pollie, beleive me it wont happen. Most likely someone will give a speech or a forum staffed with self appointed 'experts' with a set agenda and no input allowed from the peanut gallery/attendees... oh yeah... nothing new there, at least those Gender Centre employees attending will get their days pay.
