Marriage equality advocates have welcomed the launch of an Australian cover version of the world-wide hit 'Same Love', by Ben Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The song which has been covered by Cam Nacson as 'Same Love Australia' includes changes to the lyrics to add a specifically Australian flavour, such as: "My own Prime Minister can't even explain. We ask her the question, she just turns away."

Nacson said he felt a responsibility to stand up for what is right and that music is "a great tool for getting ideas out".

"When politicians see this is such a huge issue, especially for young people, I'm hoping they'll change their mind set," Nacson said.

"A lot of politicians seem to think it's not a big enough issue to worry about, so we need to show them it is something for them to worry about, something that could change their careers."

"The question I ask our leaders is what side of history do they want to be on?" Nacson continued.

"These fights have been going on for a long time - women's rights, racial rights - and marriage equality is this generation's fight."

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, welcomed the local release.

"Same Love Australia uses the power of music to send a direct plea to our national leaders - marriage equality can no longer be delayed or deferred," Croome said.

"This landmark music video is a reminder that Australia is part of a bigger world moving inexorably to equality."
