Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays (PFLAG) has welcomed the move by young Liberal Party members to support a conscience vote on same-sex marriage.

PFLAG national spokesperson Shelley Argent congratulated the Young Liberals Conference attendees for voting in favour of a conscience vote regarding marriage equality.

“Young Libs recognise that a Galaxy poll taken last year showed that 76 per cent of Coalition voters already agree Mr Abbott should allow a free or conscience vote,” Argent said.

“Plus, it’s less of an issue for younger Australians because they recognise there is nothing to fear by legislating for equality.”

Argent said political leaders in the UK and the US favoured same-sex marriage and Abbott should demonstrate his democratic leadership skills by also supporting equal marriage.

“Why are we as a first world country being left behind? Parents and friends say it’s time for marriage equality.

“As parents we will be throwing our support behind young politicians like the Young Liberals, who understand the need for same-sex attracted marriage in their own country.

"We also urge Mr Abbott to follow the Young Liberals and allow a conscience vote by the whole party.”
