Sleaze makes way for Big Gay Weekend
Sleaze Ball, one of the Mardi Gras' annual key fundraising events, is to be replaced in 2011 with Big Gay Weekend.
As one door closes, so open another. And so it is with the New Mardi Gras’ (NMG) fundraiser Sleaze Ball, which, after more than two decades, is being put to rest in 2011.
In its place will be ‘Big Gay Weekend’ which will see a wide range of events and initiatives takings place throughout Sydney, all in an effort to benefit the Mardi Gras Parade through donations and fundraisers.
Big Gay Weekend, which will take place during the October Long Weekend (September 30-October 3), will include a ‘Big Friday’ event which will see a joint effort by Oxford Street businesses to “reclaim the strip”, a wide range of community parties with donations going to the parade fund, and participation by parade groups to raise additional funds for their parade entries.
Promoters, parties and venues confirmed to take part include Bitch, Colombian Hotel, Daywash, Extra Dirty, Fag Tag, Glitter Ball, Homesexual White, In The Dark, Live, Love Muscle, Nevermind, Rising, Johan Khoury Productions, Rock Your Box as well SX, Evolution Publishing, SameSame.com.au and Sydney Star Observer.
More are expected to take part in the coming weeks.
“This really has the potential to make the Parade much bigger in 2012,” said NMG Head of Marketing & Communications Damien Eames.
“We have lots of creative people involved, but often it just takes money to make something good truly great. This initiative has the potential to make next year’s Parade significantly bigger and bolder and we’re confident the community will get behind it.”
In celebration of Big Gay Weekend, SX will be publishing two special editions leading up to the event. In addition to its Monday edition out on September 26, SX will publish a special early issue on Friday, September 30.
