Gay Christian to speak on spirituality and sexuality
Psychologist and gay Christian advocate Dr Stuart Edser will speak about the challenges faced by LGBTI Christians at an insightful presentation night in Sydney next month.
The presentation on Friday, August 3 is hosted by LGBTI Christian group Freedom2b and will explore many issues including marriage equality and the antagonism from some sections of the church.
“I distinguish fairly strongly between a personal faith in God or the divine, if you like, and any kind of faith or loyalty to the institutional church,” Edser said.
“If people have a genuine faith in God there should be no reason why being gay should exclude them from living and navigating that faith.”
Edser has a diverse Christian background and practices as a counsellor and psychologist in Newcastle.
Edser is also the author of the book Being Gay, Being Christian that was released at the beginning of this year.
The book combines Edser’s own story with current scientific theories about sexuality to provide a fresh examination of the Bible and biblical language.
“I (wrote) the book to tell the Church to wake up to itself,” Edser said in an interview with SX earlier this year.
“I would like to show young people that they do not have to suffer at the hands of an often times wilfully ignorant church, but can be happy and lead satisfying and fulfilled lives being both gay and Christian.”
Edser will also be free to answer questions at the presentation.
The Freedom2b event featuring Dr Stuart Edser takes place from 7pm, Friday, August 3 at the ACON Building, 414 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills. Sorry Stuart (author) but being a true follower of Jesus means recognising that homosexuality is sin. You can twist the Bible as much as you like to try and support your lifestyle but it doesn't change God's mind. If you choose to be gay then that's your choice, just as I made a choice to be hetrosexual, but please don't try and suggest that God is happy with your choice. The true church will never change its mind because it bases its beliefs on Biblical teachings, both Old and New Testament.
Stuart, if Jesus was born through sexual intercourse, and not "immaculate conception", what's there to being "Christian"? He was not divine.
