Fire closes off Oxford St
Firefighters are busy attempting to contain a fire which broke out on Oxford Street after midday today.
The fire began in an adult shop located on Oxford Street between Wentworth Avenue and Crown Street, Darlinghurst apartment.
Fire crews have managed to contain the fire to the first floor only, however, up to 50 workers in the area were evacuated due to thick smoke while one person was treated for smoke inhalation.
Those in nearby buildings have now been allowed to return.
“Because it’s an adult shop and there are booths, there was some difficulty locating the seat of the fire,” NSWFB Superintendent Ian Krimmer said.
“There has been minor smoke damage to the buildings either side.”
A police investigation is expected to commence once fire fighters have the incident under control.
All citybound lanes of Oxford Street in Surry Hills are closed between Flinders Street and Riley Street, with citybound traffic being diverted into Flinders Street.
Motorists travelling north on Flinders Street are being diverted into the eastbound lanes of Oxford Street.
Buses are also being diverted away from Oxford Street
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
