Help make it a Queer Prom to remember

This year’s eagerly awaited Queer Prom being put on by the likes of Twenty10, CampOut and City of Sydney may only be a fortnight away, however it’s not too late for young people to get involved and use their valued skills as a member of the organising committee to help put on the “prom of your dreams”.

To be held on Thursday, February 16 at the über-cool Red Rattler in Marrickville, Queer Prom is a drug and alcohol free event open to all young people, aged 12-26, of diverse sex, sexuality and gender.

To get prom attendees there on the night, Twenty10 will have a mini bus operating from its Newtown base to the venue, while there will also be a planned meet up group from Newcastle, Wollongong as well as from the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney regions.

Members of the Prom Promotion Crew this week told SX that the idea for Queer Prom came from the fact that many youth of diverse sex, sexuality and gender still find themselves discriminated against at school formals and other such functions.

“And rarely, many young people of diverse sex, gender and sexuality are given opportunities to become involved in social events that are specifically designed for us,” they said.

With the date of the prom getting ever closer, the team of about 15 hosts frantically working on the event have said that they could do with a bit more help.

“On the night, the stage will also be set for live performances from young people,” members of the Promotion Crew said.

“In addition there will also be a photo-booth to get some great snaps with your friends and mocktails to sip on, there will even be a parents room where unsure parents or parents who come from far away can sit and chat away from the prom action.”

While no experience necessary is required to join the prom organising committee, anyone considering joining will need to be prepared to work in a group and attend meetings once a week on Wednesday afternoons to discuss and plan aspects such as promotion, decorations, performers and DJs.

“As one of our team said the other day when we were looking at the venue, ‘It’s a Prom for Kings and for Queens and for everyone in between’,” members of the Promotion Crew said.

“So tell your friends about it, prepare to meet new friends who feel the same as you do in a fun and safe environment, get dressed up and come along to the prom of your dreams!”

Queer Prom 2012 is a free event and takes place on Thursday, February 16 from 6pm-10pm at The Red Rattler, 6 Faversham Street, Marrickville.

About the Author

Serkan Ozturk

Serkan Ozturk became a journalist after failing as a minor poet. Known amongst some circles as the ‘Van Wilder of the High Arts’ it took Serkan almost a decade of studying at three of Sydney’s major universities before finally attaining a single, much vaunted Communication degree from that bastion of Brutalist architecture – the University of Technology, Sydney.

When not being investigated by the NSW Police Commissioner for crimes against satire, Serkan can be found on his bike or generally looking for the next big story.
