It will be battle on and off the field when Melbourne and Sydney gay and inclusive rugby clubs the Melbourne Chargers and Sydney Convicts meet on September 17.

The Sydney Convicts travel to Melbourne to take on the Chargers for the Purchas Cup, the gay rugby award named after Convicts founder Andrew Purchas.

The game takes place at the Chargers’ home ground in Albert Park from 12 noon. Later that day the teams meet again, switching grass and grime for jelly and jocularity at the Laird Hotel for Wrestle-a-Rugger from 9pm.

Hosted by Michael Dalton and Luke Gallagher, door charges from Wrestle-a-Rugger go toward the Chargers’ bid for the international gay rugby prize, the Bingham Cup to be held in Manchester in 2012.
