Convicts rugby team seeks new recruits

If you’re looking to play with men at the top of their game, the world’s gay rugby union champions are giving you that chance this weekend in Sydney.

The Sydney Convicts, who won the world cup of gay rugby union last year, are looking for recruits of all sexualities to have a kick-around and a barbecue this Sunday at Centennial Park during their Open Day.

The Convicts are looking for players at all levels – including men who have never played – as they prepare to build on their international Bingham Cup triumph last year, and their win in the local union competition.

“We met a huge number of guys interested in rugby during Fair Day,” said Convicts co-president David Whittaker.

“Some have played quite a bit of rugby, while others haven’t played at all. We have a proud history of introducing new players to the sport. This Sunday we’re keen to meet anyone interested in playing, even if they’ve never picked up a rugby ball before at all.”

There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks after, and a chance to meet the players and coaches.

The Sydney Convicts are an all-inclusive team: anyone, gay, bi or straight is encouraged to participate.
