Leichhardt to show Mardi Gras spirit

Leichhardt Council is getting into the Mardi Gras spirit this year with a view to host an event in the lead-up to the parade.

The rainbow flag will also fly proudly atop Leichhardt Town Hall during the festival while Council will get together with representatives of the LGBTI community early in 2013 to come up with an idea for what shape the event itself will take.

Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne said he wanted to bring the local LGBTI community together.

“I would really like to see the Council do more to integrate the Gay and Lesbian community into Council activities,” he said.

“We will be convening a workshop early next year to see what we can do to get them more involved in Council activities.”

Leichhardt local Teresa Savage said Leichhardt had a very significant LGBTI community, with many members having lived in the area for decades.

“It is wonderful to see Council participating in our annual celebration and acknowledging us in future community planning,” she said.

Following Darcy Byrne's flag raising ceremony the flag indeed flew proudly from the Leichhardt Town Hall as pictured, unfortunately for a few days only! it is now nowhere to be seen! After contacting Leichardt Council re the whereabouts of the rainbow flag a staff member informed there was an issue with the flag!
Hardly a good start for 'getting into the Mardi Gras spirit" Darcy Byrne!!!
