Claire de Lune to be inducted into 2013 DIVA Hall of Fame
Claire de Lune will be inducted into the 2013 DIVA Hall of Fame, organisers have revealed.
“Claire is a respected member of the drag community and meets the published criteria for this award to a very high degree,” the board of the Drag Industry Variety Awards, or DIVAs, said in a statement.
Claire de Lune is the drag alter ego of Marc Kuzma.
Since hitting the scene in the nineties, Claire has filled the roles of performer, producer, media personality, celebrity chef and, more recently, restauranteur.
Among the highlights of Claire’s career were her cooking segments on Kerry Anne Kennerley’s daytime variety program Midday, which led to appearances on Channel V and Foxtel.
In the scene, Claire has taken to the stage at a wide variety of venues, including Stonewall Hotel, Midnight Shift, Annie’s Bar and The Albury Hotel.
More recently, Claire was the driving force behind Oxford Street cabaret venue, Slide, where she introduced an innovative entertainment program that allowed other drag performers an opportunity to showcase their talents on stage. Slide is also renowned for its popular dinner-theatre experience, El’ Circo, for which Claire was instrumental in putting together.
On the fundraising front, Claire has given her time and talents in support of a broad range of charities and causes including the AIDS Trust of Australia, The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, The Aurora Group and Twenty10.
These days, Claire runs the highly successful restaurant on Oxford Street, Claire’s Kitchen at Le Salon.
“I feel very honoured and I am very grateful for my body of work to be acknowledged,” Kuzma told SX.
“I’m not in the scene that much – so I don’t know the new generation of performers very well, so it will be interesting for me to see them and for them to hear what I have done.”
The Hall of Fame award adds to an already long list of DIVA accolades for Claire de Lune, including Entertainer of the Year in 2000, Queen of Hearts in 2001 and Variety Award in 2010.
“We think Claire is one of a very small drag segment who really has done it all,” the DIVA board said.
“There is absolutely no doubt that the name of Claire De Lune is recognised with the Sydney drag scene and deserving of this great honour.”
The DIVA Awards is on Monday, October 28, at UNSW Roundhouse, Kensington.
