Parents called to speak up for marriage equality

LAST UPDATED // Monday, 20 March 2017 10:29 Written by // Cec Busby

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) have called for parents who support marriage equality to take action on the issue and lobby their MPs before parliament ends.

The call to action is a continuation of PFLAG’s successful Make It Law campaign which helped defeat the Coalition’s planned plebiscite last year. PFLAG has urged supporters of marriage equality to take action through their new Speak Up campaign.

With pressure mounting on the Coalition to allow a free vote, PFLAG national spokesperson, Shelley Argent, says it's time to move on marriage equality.

"Now is the time to act if we are to have any chance of achieving marriage equality in this term of Government,” PFLAG national spokesperson, Shelley Argent, said.

The Speak Up campaign is aimed at Liberals who support marriage equality but can't speak up for it because they don't have a free vote.

It urges everyday Australians who back marriage equality to write to Liberal MPs urging them to do more to allow marriage equality to pass, including pushing for a free vote in their Party

"I urge anyone who is yet to send an email to do so asap at demandafreevote.com.au."

"Do it for yourself and do it for your loved ones,” Argent said.

Since launching over half a million Australians have seen the campaign, with almost 100,000 sharing it online.
