A poll conducted by News Limited yesterday has also shown increasing support for marriage equality amongst the majority of Australians.

The Newspoll confirms results from yesterday’s AME survey which showed support for marriage equality at 72%.

The Newspoll results released today showed approval for same-sex marriage at 68%. Both poll results are up from the previous research by Galaxy which showed support for marriage equality at 64%.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said, "Newspoll has confirmed what we already knew from the Crosby/Textor research, the community debate on marriage equality is over and it's time for politicians to act."

Croome said it was time for MPs to work together to push for reform.
“We call on MPs to work together across party boundaries to achieve a reform the Australian people are firmly behind in ever greater numbers."

AME deputy director, Ivan Hinton agreed that many Australians now understood the benefits of same-sex marriage to the community.

“A great majority of Australians have opened their hearts to the issue of marriage equality, realising it will bring benefits to many families around the country and causes no harm to no one."
