MCC hosts fundraiser for LGBT singer
Local Darlinghurst businesses and the Metropolitan Community Church joined forces last Sunday night to raise funds for a member of the LGBTI community to travel to the USA to perform at a Christian Conference.
Over $2800 was raised at a special community event at Belloccio Café., with entertainment provided by local Drag Diva Dame Gaynor Tension who sparkled and shimmied her way through classics from Liza Minelli and the musicals Chicago and Caberet.
Also performing was Nate Evans, who as a result of the fundraising now has the opportunity to travel overseas and represent Australia and showcase his singing talent to LGBT friendly Churches.
“This will be such a wonderful opportunity that the community and MCC is providing,” said Evans. “I’ve never been overseas before and it’s exciting to think of the opportunities that might spring up as a result of this trip.”
Pastor of MCC Sydney, Rev Greg Smith, said he was blown away by the generosity of the community. He also described the US conference as a fantastic opportunity for Evans.
“For many LGBT singers who’ve been rejected from mainstream churches because of their sexuality, especially in Australia, their singing hopes are over. This conference will open up a world of opportunity for our Young Adults here in Sydney and last Sunday night showed just what the community can achieve when we all pull together and give our young people a chance.”
MCC is still fundraising for more young adults to attend the conference, If you would like to donate, visit: www.mccsydney.org
